Gomi Goes to Affliction: Trilogy
Posted by MMA WW Staff on the 6 July 2009 | View Comments
After much debate, Japanese superstar Takanori Gomi will officially make his long-awaited U.S. debut at debut “Affliction: Trilogy” on August 1st against Rafaello Oliveira.
Gomi, who was once the world’s most dominating lightweight fighter, has dropped two of his last three fights. He was finally able to get off the snide against Takashi Nakakura at “Shooto: Tradition Final” this past May.
His career appeared to spiral downward after Nick Diaz dominated him throughout their Pride FC bout in 2007. Although Diaz subbed him with a nasty gogoplata in the 2ndRound, Gomi was let off the hook with a ‘No Contest’ ruling after Diaz subsequently tested positive for “Mary Jane.”
Oliveira, who holds an 8-1 pro mark, will be taking on Gomi in one of the night’s five pay-per-view bouts.
Here is the list of fighters that will be competing inside the ring on August 1st:
