Jake Shields

Biography

Shields is one of the strongest grapplers at 170 pounds and one of the view elite welterweights not under contract in the UFC. His solid amateur wrestling base and accomplished jiu-jitsu skills have taken Shields a long way and have given him time to develop his striking game.

Shields fought in smaller shows in the United States from 1999 to 2001 and in 2002 started fighting in Shooto eventually winning the middleweight belt. In 2006 he would compete in, and win, the Rumble on the Rock 175 pound tournament claiming his spot as one of the best welterweights in the world. Shields had earned a reputation as a boring fighter with most of wins coming by way of decision but started to change peoples minds in 2006. After a few stoppage wins in some smaller shows, Shields signed with EliteXC where he would eventually become its first and only welterweight champion by defeating respected veteran Nick Thompson.

His last fight for EliteXC was an arm bar victory over Paul Daley bringing his winning streak to eleven with his last seven not making it out of the second round. Notable Wins: Hayato Sakurai, Akira Kikuchi, Yushin Okami, Carlos Condit, Renato Verissimo, Mike Pyle
