Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki

Biography

Aoki’s nickname “Tobikan Judan” translates to “master of flying submissions” and he more than earns that name. A judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, Aoki is one of the most dangerous submission specialists in MMA. He made popular the long, spandex pants he wears in fights to add more friction to his submission game. Aoki began his professional fighting career in DEEP before moving to Shooto where he eventually won the Shooto Welterweight belt. He then spent 2006-07 splitting time in Shooto and Pride. It was in Pride where he started to garner an international fanbase for his incredible submissions despite being a very poor striker. He executed the first recognized gogoplata in major MMA against Joachim Hansen. In 2008 he fought seven times, all but one in the DREAM lightweight promotion where he made it to the finals before losing to Joachim Hansen by TKO.

Notable Wins

Akira Kikuchi (twice), Joachim Hansen, Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante, Caol Uno
